Aliasing

Post by RefleX »

Ok, boring topic. What are your thoughts on aliasing (using fake nicknames)?

I think that it's pretty fun, for the most part is because I do MUCH better when I play under an alias (very odd).

Yeah, I do it rarely, only whne im bored.

And I think the main reason people do better under aliases is because they dont have to worry about stuff like

score
performance
noobs calling u a botter
etc.
etc.

it become smore enjoyable and therefore you do better, for me atleast.

Meh... I'll get called a botter w/e name I use. Although I'm finding more and more that once they familiarize to one particular name I don't get it quite as much.

Aliasing is fun and all, but gets annoying when people start asking who you really are.

I guess you only think that you're playing better. I've heard a lot of stories that aliasing "makes me less nervous" or "noobs stop chasing me". Those stories are just poor excuses. Nobody chasing you in pub games and even if they do they will chase you just seeing that you're a good player regardless your alias. Even more, chasers will be picking you just to make your aliasing life more difficult.
And bottom line: When you're using your normal nickname, you're more responsible of what you're doing and what you're saying. Another thing is a respect to players that are playing in the same game. When they're knowing you, they will try to make a team with you, since they know your skills and habits. Noobs will try to learn something from you. Most players I know have somebody in their gaming life whom they're calling a teacher. The one who showed basics and from they tried to learn how to play. You may score more playing under alias, but according to my experience, my team wins more often when I'm NOT aliasing.
Sad, few players realize all said above. And last thing. Best CTF and DM players I knew in my gaming life were not aliasing at all or did that rarely. Exception is Pup. :P In QuakeWorld times some servers were banning for aliasing.

Well i dont pug that often, cuz when I do it takes other players liek 40 minutes to get to that map for some reason, and I am very impatient. lol.

And It is true though, when I alias I do not have to worry, because even if they do say stupid stuff like "OMG YOU R BOTTING OMG LIKE BAN HIM" It doesnt hurt my rep..

Some guy named aod migue follows me everywhere I go and tells people that i use aimbots to snipe people and get wicked sick, but I dont.
He is just another noob that makes gaming more stressfull for some people.

If only epic could make it mandatory for all demo users to upgrade their versions so demo servers could have antitcc final or something... theyre would be way less botters, and noobs doing the botter cry.

I rarely alias, the only time I do is when I'm play like crap and I don't want people to see me playing so bad . Anyways, you'll probably know it's me cause my alias' name is "Alias".

I've probably argued w/ Hogs about this a 100 times! >.< Anyways here's my rant on it.... I personally don't think aliasing is either good or bad. It's just a name. I really don't think it affects anyone's performance at all. I simply don't think it should matter whether someone aliases or not. I really don't see how it is a disrespect to other players. My main reason for aliasing in PUBS is to avoid the 2 most frequently asked (and extremely annoying) questions: 1) Can I join MD? and 2) I got banned from your server / My friend got banned from your server, can you unban me/him/her? Also the best players I've played w/ so far have all aliased like crazy. Balrog, Elle, Vindicator, and Tittles are the four best I can name off the top of my head from lg that alias like hell. And frankly, in my noobie days, if I saw RicoSuave behind me, I would turn the hell around and chase him all the way back. So to some degree, the chasing reason is a valid and logical excuse. As for having more even teams because people know you and try to get on your team like you said, I am not sure if that really makes a difference. Just because I see a bRu*DrTittles on the other team doesn't mean I am going to get on his team or get on the opposite team. I'll just stick to whatever team I am assigned to and if teams are uneven or really one-sided, then I'll switch. </rant>

ah yes aliasing, I use to aliase the last year I played ut99 hence I never made many new ut friends after I started constantly changing my name. When I did chat I always had to go thru a list of names I used just so the player I chatted to would have an idea of who I am or was. But I aliased a little in 2k4ut so I could catch botters on iDA demo. But when I did play 2k4ut I didnt want to aliase cuz I wanted you to know who was fraggin yo azz! :spank: And yea there is a certain amount of attitude teammates gain when they know who is who on thier team...hi guys still playin ut i see

Tizzle, the subject of discussion between you and me was not aliasing but use of empty names in pug. That's another story. I felt like I'm wasting my time when I'm pugging against nonmae players. I can't use voice to call who's who, can't learn from how other players play etc.

And I can't say anything about skills of guys you mentioned except for Tittles, who plays in pugs a lot, just because of one reason: they alias so much that I did not even see them in games. So I can't tell how they play, how good they're at team game etc. People I consider best players are all-around good. And best shooting is only 1 of many skills they possess.

Good players have no reason to alias. What are they hiding from? From themselves? Afraid that somebody may see them failing in pub games? What kind of players you're if you're afraid of that? ;)
